Local government autonomy is essential for fostering effective grassroots governance. Here are twelve compelling reasons why I strongly advocate for local government autonomy and why it benefits us all:

  1. End Arbitrary Powers of State Governors: Local government autonomy curbs the unchecked powers of state governors, ensuring that local governments operate independently without undue interference.

  2. Stop the Looting of Local Government: Allocations State governors often appoint caretaker committees for extended periods, siphoning off local government allocations before conducting superficial elections to install their successors. Autonomy will put an end to this looting and foster transparent governance.

  3. More Responsive and Efficient Governance Autonomous local governments can respond more swiftly and effectively to the needs of their communities, leading to better governance at the grassroots level.

  4. Direct Accountability to Communities When local governments are autonomous, officials are directly accountable to the people they serve, fostering a culture of transparency and responsibility.

  5. Better Infrastructure Maintenance and Development Local governments with autonomy can prioritize and manage infrastructure projects more effectively, ensuring timely maintenance and development.

  6. Local Economic Growth and Job Creation Autonomy enables local governments to implement policies tailored to their unique economic environments, spurring local economic growth and creating jobs.

  7. Effective Resource Allocation Local governments can allocate resources more effectively to areas that need them most, based on a clear understanding of local priorities and challenges.

  8. Empowerment of Local Communities Autonomy empowers local communities by giving them a stronger voice in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives.

  9. Reduced Corruption Without State-Appointed Caretaker Committees Eliminating state-appointed caretaker committees reduces opportunities for corruption, fostering a more honest and accountable local government system.

  10. Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Traditions Local governments with autonomy can better preserve and promote their unique cultural heritage and traditions, enriching the broader national tapestry.

  11. Enhanced Delivery of Education and Healthcare Services Autonomous local governments can tailor education and healthcare services to meet the specific needs of their communities, improving overall service delivery.

  12. Improved Implementation of Social Welfare Programs Local governments with autonomy can more effectively design and implement social welfare programs that address the unique needs of their populations.

Recent court rulings favoring local government autonomy underscore the importance of this cause. With over 22 governors using caretaker committees, it’s time to stop the mismanagement of local government allocations. Let’s build a better Edo State with strong, autonomous local governments.
